Building upon remarkable results from animal studies, a groundbreaking bergamot study in humans was published in 2011. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 237 participants were given either placebo or bergamot polyphenol fraction (BPF) for 30 days. The study focused on several different cardiovascular parameters, including blood lipids and a subgroup of participants with Metabolic Syndrome (this syndrome is not a disease, but rather a cluster of health factors to keep an eye on). The BPF used in the study was concentrated bergamot juice in powder form, at a dose of either 500 mg or 1000 mg daily, taken before meals. The BPF contained the same five standardized major flavonoids that are in Best Bergamonte Polyphenols: neoeriocitrin, naringin neohesperidin, melitidine and brutelidine. The results of this intricate trial were impressive. In just one month, 500 or 1000 mg of bergamot polyphenol was shown to support favorable triglyceride and HDL levels in the majority of participants. Furthermore, BPF was shown to be helpful for the subgroup with Metabolic Syndrome, and measurements of flow-mediated vasodilation suggested support for maintaining healthy vascular tone. The researchers conclude that the results of this study suggest BPF produces complex effects on metabolic regulation, offering a wide range of benefits.
Scientists are still working out which biochemical pathways in the body would explain the beneficial effects of these polyphenols. Since the polyphenols seem to promote several advantageous actions, several theories have been considered. One is that the polyphenols interact with the NF-kB pathway, calming down the transmission of oxidative signals (relieving oxidative stress). Similar to the known activity of flavonoids in other citrus fruits, the positive impact of this is often seen at the level of endothelial cells (those cells lining the blood vessel walls). Another explanation for some ofbergamot's benefits is that flavonoids such as the melitidine and brutieridine in bergamot juice have structural similarities to an enzyme that influences healthy blood lipid metabolism in the body. Further research in human populations is warranted to confirm the fantastic results that have been reported thus far.
