The main active catechin in green tea is EGCG or epigallocatechin gallate. It appears to be the most powerful of the catechins with antioxidant activity about 25-100 times more potent than vitamins C and E.

Recent studies have suggested catechins play a substantial role in promoting weight loss. In one study it was suggested that green tea had a significant suppression of food intake, body weight gain and fat tissue accumulation. Even more interesting was that the study suggested Leptin levels in serum showed a decrease with green tea, indicating that green tea may have a direct effect on lowering body weight. Other studies suggest that green tea increases thermogenesis (increased caloric expenditure). In these studies, it suggests that green tea extract stimulates thermogenesis to an extent that is much greater than could be achieved by its caffeine content, meaning that the thermogenic properties of green tea may be due to an interaction between its high content of catechin-polyphenols along with caffeine. It is believed that the thermogenic effect of green tea is due to an increase in the levels of norepinephrine (a stimulatory catecholamine) because catechin-polyphenols are known to inhibit catechol-O-methyl-transferase (the enzyme that degrades norepinephrine). One study tested the effect of green tea extract on 24-hour energy expenditure in 10 healthy men. The results suggested that the green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in 24-hour energy expenditure (approximately 800 calories per day) and a significant increase in the body's use of fat as an energy source. It also suggested that the 24-hour urinary norepinephrine excretion was 40% higher during treatment with the green tea extract than with the placebo, suggesting that green tea increased norepinephrine output. Also the same amount of caffeine that was present in the green tea was used alone and had no effect on energy expenditure of fat oxidation, further suggesting that the thermogenic properties of green tea are due to compounds other than caffeine alone.

Caffeine - Chemically known as trimethylxanthine, caffeine is a compound made up of four of the most common elements: carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. Caffeine, a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant is one of the best-tested ergogenic aids and is known to help athletes train harder and longer. It also stimulates the brain and contributes to clearer thinking and greater concentration.

There are more than 70 studies on the utilization of caffeine for both endurance exercise and short-term, high intensity exercise. The vast majority conclude that caffeine does indeed enhance performance and makes the effort seem easier. The average improvement in performance is about 12 percent, with greater benefits noticed during endurance exercise. In research studies, the amount of caffeine that enhances performance ranges from 1.5 to 4 mg/lb body weight taken one hour before exercise. Results suggested that subjects had no detrimental effects of caffeine on 24-hour urine volume, meaning that by day's end, the urine losses were similar whether the person consumed no caffeine or a high dose.

Directions
As a dietary supplement, take 1-2 capsules of Boiling Point with 8 oz. of water before breakfast or morning workout, andanother 1-2 capsules 6-8 hours later. Do not exceed 4 capsules in any 24-hour period. Do not take within 6 hours of bedtime.
